GT5: GT Academy Announced for the U.S.

Better late than never: With the upcoming release of Gran Turismo 5, Sony Computer Entertainment America and Polyphony Digital Inc., in collaboration with Nissan North America, has announced the popular "GT Academy" is coming to the United States. The contest starts on December 20th, with an amazing grand prize: flying to the UK, joining the GT Academy at the Silverstone Grand Prix, and receiving training for an international racing license and becoming a professional race car driver, with a chance to race at the 24 Hours of Dubai.

"With the upcoming launch of Gran Turismo 5, it’s a very exciting time to team with Nissan to announce GT Academy," said Scott A. Steinberg, VP of Product Marketing, SCEA. "With the realistic racing experience that only Gran Turismo 5 provides, GT Academy will identify someone who truly has the skills to become a pro race car driver, providing the chance of a lifetime to win the ultimate prize."

Kaz Yamauchi: Release date to be announced shortly.

Kaz's latest post on his twitter reads:

まもなく発売日が発表されそうだ。うぉ・・・シビレるぜ・・・。

Which Google Translator interperets as: "Release date is likely to be announced shortly." I certainly hope it is announced soon, I think Sony is getting tired of sending cease & desist notices to every Dick, Jane & GTPlanet that's posting leaked videos and pictures.

Kaz wants more power from the PS3

An interesting segment from our earlier story about Esquire's interview with Kazunori Yamauchi, is that he still feels restricted by the hardware of Sony's PlayStation 3:

It is uplifting too, that – unlike certain rivals – he is not blindly sycophantic about the platform for which he develops. “Software has to be created under the restriction of the hardware,” he says. “With each new PlayStation, the vessel has become bigger, but it’s still not enough. With GT5, we’ve made it as clean and beautiful as possible within the confines of the space we’re given, but of course there’s a lot more that we want to put in.”

Makes you wonder what Kaz & crew could accomplish given the chance to develop a Gran Turismo game only for the PC market, with the processing power of modern multi-core CPU and GPU's.

Gran Turismo 5 leaked – videos & more online

It sure didn't take take long for a copy of Gran Turismo 5 to sneak its way out of the factory did it? GTPlanet.net has all kinds of coverage from the leaked game, including

Absolutely nuts! I personally am not going to look because I want to be surprised when I finally pick it up, but that doesn't mean our readers can't!

(Actually, now they can't. Sony has submitted a C&D to GTPlanet, and all videos and images have since been removed. -Ed)
